Pastor Denise Roberts

If you are unfamiliar with the United Methodist system, then you may not be aware that we are now in what is called the ‘appointment season’. This is the time of year (January through June) when clergy appointments are made.

The United Methodist Church uses an itinerant system to appoint its pastors to churches. In our ordination vows, pastors agree to serve where called and to abide by the discernment of the Bishop and the Cabinet.

This means that every June, a number of pastors across the Conference find themselves moving on to new places of ministry.

This year, I am one of those pastors on the move. I am thrilled that I have been appointed to serve St. Andrew’s, as well as the South Sound Co-op, and I am excited about all of us joining in ministry together.

Moving always brings with it a mixture of excitement and anxiety for both the new pastor and the receiving congregation, and my prayer is that the excitement will far exceed the anxiety.

I am thankful to Pastor Dirk and to your Church Council for their guidance, flexibility, and investment of time during this process. I look forward to getting settled in Lacey, and engaging in the busy life of the church and the community. I pray that my gifts will enhance the gifts already present in this church, and that together, we will generate even more enthusiasm, more outreach and continued momentum for the work ahead.

I look forward to meeting you all in July. Until then, may the peace of the Lord be with you. Pastor Denise

My Calling:

It was during my time at HP that God called me to the ministry. I had been involved in a variety of leadership positions in the church for many years when people started mentioning to me that I should consider leading a church. At the same time, I found myself acting as a chaplain to many of my colleagues in the workplace. After five years of acting like Jonah and ignoring this message about my true calling, I finally started listening to God, and praying about it. And here I am. I have never looked back. Why would I?

I consider it an honor, a privilege, and a joy, to be a pastor and to be invited into some of the most intimate spaces of a person’s life. I take my role as spiritual guide to the congregation very seriously. I love to preach and teach, and I especially love to apply the timeless truths of Scripture to our everyday 21st century lives.

When not engaging in church or community activities, I enjoy walking and playing with my two dogs, Maggie and Jiggs. I love to read, mostly theology, horror novels, and mysteries. I know the horror novels don’t quite fit, but, there you have it. I also am a rabid quilter, and it is rare that I meet a piece of fabric that I don’t like.

I also love awakening each day to see what new surprise God has in store for me.
