News from Pastor Denise

Dear Beloved Family,

Since March, we have all been trying to navigate the pandemic with fortitude, faith and love. And as a church, we have been using our varied gifts in the community and serving others while holding out hope of somehow returning to St. Andrew’s for worship. Your St. Andrew’s staff has been working hard in these months to create a plan to bring us together in creative, safe and healthy ways.

Toward that end, our Reopening Plan has been submitted and approved by our District Superintendent. We now have the opportunity to return to worship in our sanctuary on Sunday mornings beginning on September 13th.

Between now and Sept. 13th, I invite you to watch and pray as we will soon have dates, times, and our details for our reopening which includes not only Sunday worship, but gathering times for any small groups and classes that desire to meet in the church as well.

And, while we will be returning to the building in various forms quite soon, please be aware that much will be different. We will not be returning to the same times, methods, and set-up that we left behind back in March. New times and challenges necessitate, as Jesus taught, that we look to enjoy the "new wine" and not try to fit the new into old wineskins.

Church will be different and will look different as we live in these challenging times and use new practices and forms of community and conversation to keep each other safe – particularly the most vulnerable among us. Please keep in mind that we will continue our online worship service for a period of time even as we begin our in-person service. Watch and pray for more details to come forward in the next few weeks.

It may not be the same as it once was, but we are still St. Andrew’s at heart and our call is still to Seek God, to Reach Out, and to Love One Another.

God bless, and thanks for praying!

Pastor Denise

Tuesday Morning Prayer Group

Please join us on zoom for a Tuesday morning Prayer Group at 9am. For the next few weeks, my prayer theme is Unraveled.

Unraveled is exactly how many of us have been feeling first through the pandemic and quarantine and now with the strong cry for justice from voices crying out across our nation. For me, the word “unraveled” holds a lot of anxious, exhausted energy. That’s exactly what I’ve sensed in our country and world these days.

What happens when our world seems to be falling apart? How do we press onward when our tightly knit plans unravel into loose threads? What do we become when our identity - or the path we are on - comes undone?

In our unraveling, sometimes life surprises us with unexpected joy, love, and hope—with a new beginning we couldn’t have imagined. Sometimes we need God to unravel us, for we long to be changed.

Over the next few weeks, I will be exploring stories of unraveled shame, identity, fear, grief, dreams, and expectations. These are stories where God meets us in the spiraling, unraveling of our plans, and us, into something new.

Please join us. You can find us via www.fumcoly.org. Click on online faith formation. Click on Morning Prayer.

Matching Grant Available for St. Andrew’s Preschool

Some of you may be aware that since 1972, St. Andrew’s has operated a preschool. It was initially set up as an extended Sunday School for members of the church and has always been open to the community. Many of our current church members have previously taught at the preschool, or can share memories of their children attending our preschool. Our playground is the result of a gift made by one of our early preschool teachers.

Over the years, our Preschool has continued to gain the support of our church and our community. We are blessed that each year, we’ve been able to provide scholarships to either low-income families or families in need. Each year, we’ve been able to hold down our costs and to meet our budget and teaching goals, even though all of our advertising remains word of mouth.

Over the past several years we’ve seen an increase in the number of military families participating in our program. In the first half of 2020, military families made up 50% of our attendees. We recognize that years of engagement with our community have resulted in a strong bond of trust in our church. We are thankful for our Preschool Director Kathy Bowen and her staff. Our strong community presence would not be possible without Kathy’s leadership and the dedication of her teachers.

Just recently, St. Andrew’s UMC applied for and was awarded a matching grant from the PNW Annual Conference Fund for Families. This grant will be used to support our St. Andrew’s Preschool program.

This matching grant means that for every $2.00 that our church raises, the Annual Conference will contribute an additional dollar up to $1000.

In these rapidly changing times, what a blessing of stability these funds can be to our Preschool program. The timing is especially helpful to us as this grant will help our preschool mitigate the reopening costs associated with the pandemic. We anticipate an increase in expenses not only for materials but also for at least one additional preschool staff member.

I want to ask your help in meeting our goal of raising $2000 so that we might have the full benefit of the grant. I invite you to prayerfully consider a financial gift to our Preschool so that we might continue to help families in our church and in our community. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Food Bank Donations

On our Sunday, July 5th drive thru celebration we collected $1,365 in donations and half a truck load of food. This was such a heartwarming outpouring of love we wanted to thank each and everyone who has participated over the last 4 months in donating food and funds to support our local Thurston County Food Bank.

For being a “small church” we have collected a total of $6,212.77 in funds and 2 truckloads of food in the last 4 months of our Covid-19 shutdown. This is truly something to be proud of and shows the amazing love and generosity St. Andrew’s has for our community. Thank You All So Much!

Cooperative Youth Ministry

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to you God in heaven. Matthew 5:16 NRSV

Dear Co-Op Youth & Families,

We hope this message finds you well. While we know this summer hasn't been what any of us hoped or planned for, we have been proud of all the ways you've been reaching out to each other with phone calls, social media, care package deliveries and more. Your resilience in the face of turmoil is a gift. We also know that many of your are struggling spiritually and mentally with this prolonged season of uncertainty physically separated from friends and loved ones and anxious about what the future holds.

We wanted to let you know that your youth ministry team has been praying for you all every day and seeking the wisdom of the Holy Spirit in discerning how best to serve you in this time. We know that many of you would like to gather together again in person. At this time we do not know when it will be possible to do so but know that we are actively developing plans that we will be presenting to our District Superintendent for ways that we may be able to safely gather in the coming months.

Until that time we would love the opportunity to spend some time together virtually and so…
You're Invited to a Virtual Campfire!

Sunday July 26, 1:30pm-3:00pm

Bring yourself, a s'more or other camp snack and be ready to play some Bible trivia games, pray together & laugh together.
